RYA Shorebased Navigation Courses

RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship Course

This is a great starting point in the world of seamanship and navigation. You learn the basics of navigation including how to read charts, use navigation equipment and tides. Other topics covered include safety, seamanship, weather and passage planning. This is the start point in the RYA shorebased scheme.

RYA Day Skipper Course Shorebased

This course is highly recommended for those wishing to take the Day Skipper Practical or the ICC assessment. Topics covered include, navigation, rules of the road, buyage, tides, meteorology to a level needed to be able to skipper your own yacht in familiar waters.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster / Coastal Theory Course

This course is a must for those that aspire to become Yachtmasters or undertake coastal passages that involve entry into unfamiliar waters and overnight passages. It builds on Day Skipper Theory, so prior navigation experience is necessary. This course is also a requirement for those looking to progress under the MCA scheme for the superyacht industry.

RYA/MCA Ocean
Theory Course

This course is the most advanced under the RYA Scheme, so prior navigation experience and skills up to Coastal level is required. Learn the art of celestial navigation, plan ocean passages and understand global weather patterns. A key course for those looking to get their RYA Yachtmaster Ocean certificate or progress to higher levels in the MCA scheme for superyachts.

Coastal Navigation Course

This nationally recognised navigation bundle is a course designed in Australia for Australians looking to cruise along the coast. It covers Navigation techniques, Passage Planning, and Weather and Collision Regulation. Upon completing the course, you can opt to take the assessment and earn the unit of competence (MARH013) which is a module in the Coxswain course. (additional charges apply)

Passage Planning Course

This workshop forms part of our Navigation Qualification. This includes everything you need to prepare properly and enjoy your time on the water. The aim is to get hands-on with how to plan a passage, including looking at publications, planning, executing and monitoring a safe passage no matter the distance

Introduction to Weather Course

This workshop forms part of our Navigation Qualification. It’s a great introduction and foundation to weather. We will cover weather theory, global and local weather patterns, and other weather-related phenomena. We will also cover how to obtain and interpret forecasts and do some of your own forecasting once you are on the water.

Collision Regulations Course

This course is also part of the Coastal Navigation Course. Boating is not a contact activity and there are rules to keep them from coming into contact, they are called the IRPCS (International Regulation for Prevention of Collision at Sea), or ColRegs for short. Every one that puts to see must know these, or it is like driving a car without knowing the rules of the road: it is dangerous.
